IW0UEI expedition to JN30XN, September 2004

After the successful expedition during the Perseids and because the weather was still good enough I decided to go back to JN30XN a few more mornings.

This time the crew consisted of myself and 1 rat, who has now passed away…..

Every day the weather was quite good, especially on October 1.  Since I had to leave from the winterport of Fertilia this time the distance to sail increased by about 17.6 nautical miles and sailing time increased to about 2 hours.  I left home in Sassari around 03:30z every day to arrive at the location at around 06:10z.  Total one-way travel time about 2:40 hours….

MS reflections during the first three days very very bad.  The fourth day they were much better as can be seen from the log.

This time as well as last time I was QRV with a 5 element 0.65wl antenna (part of a 9 element F9FT), for the next time (possibly the beginning of October) I am working on a 5 element 0.75wl antenna (part of a 15 element CueDee).  It is very difficult to get much antenna gain because of the movement from the boat.  Because the boat is small a narrow angle will often point at the water or at the moon but not the direction I want to beam.  A short antenna with big horizontal and vertical angle works best.

The power used is limited to about 70W because of power limitations on the boat.  Higher power requires the engine to run continuous or using a generator.

The numbers:

4 mornings of operation

11 FSK441 QSO’s

1 JT65 QSO (tropo)

7 SSB QSO’s.

150 Nautical Miles (288km) sailed

360km by car

Equipment used:

Icom IC820h

Icom IC706 (spare radio)

Homemade Audio/Vox interface

September 28, 2004:

Active today from abt 06:25-12:00z.  A little longer than planned due to the good sea conditions.   Meteor scatter conditions were not good at all (only 8 pings heard in 5 hours) so the result is only 2 completed FSK441 QSO’s and a few tropo QSO’s.  Congratulations to the lucky ones!

September 29, 2004:

The sea was not as calm today.  More wind and higher waves but still QRV till 06:20-10:40z.  Rocks remain bad, several QSO’s NC.

September 30, 2004:

Nice and quiet sea.  A good day to be out.  Today I was accompanied by dolphins.  Sadly they can not make rocks…  Only 2 stations complete.

October 1, 2004:

No wind, sunshine and a quiet sea.  Temperature about 18 degrees.  Today was a good meteorscatter day with 6 completed QSO’s.
