IW0UEI/MM Expedition plans

Update (2005-08-26):

The rest of the expedition has been canceled due to serious engine trouble.  Because of repair time, QRL and changing weather no more /MM until 2006.  New plans will be announced here.  Read more below.

There was not much luck with the planned operation from JN31XA and JN30XX (only a few meters away) this year.  I was ready to go from August 19th but the weather prevented sailing.  On the 24th I went out to sea but the waves were still too high for a good operation so I turned around and waited another day.  Finally on the 25th of August seaconditions were good and I went to JN31XA.

I was ready for operation at 07z and immediately had a large pile-up.  Some stations were calling only with callsign, please don’t do that as it requires an extra transmit sequence.  When you call me include both callsigns and report, do not call if you have not heard me already.

I operated from 07:00-11:40z and made a total of 20 QSO’s, 17 in FSK441 and 3 in SSB to the following squares:

On the way home I ran into engine problems.  The short trip to Stintino harbor took 3 hours because one of the injectionpumps was failing.  Speed dropped to only 4.5 knots and repair was not possible.  Arrived in the port at 14:35z.  Checked the engines and pump with a mechanic and decided that extensive repairs are needed.  If the weather is good I will try to move the boat to Porto Conte (a 6-7 hour trip) where it can be repaired.  The expedition season is over however.  QRL will start on the 29th and this is a big repair.  I plan to do a complete overhaul of the engines this winter together with many other needed jobs.

Next year I will be better prepared and try again with my new IS0 callsign.  JN31 will surely be on the schedule again for those who missed it this year…

Some photo’s will be added to this site later.

Update (2005-08-25):

Expedition has started, Tony is QRV in the ON4KST chat via GPRS, http://www.on4kst.com/chat for latest info check there.

Update (2005-08-24):

Latest info per SMS:  Started from the harbor but open sea is too blurred.  Waves do not permit operation so I go back.

The boat is now in Stintino harbor, abt 15 miles SE from JN31XA.  The forecast for today is winds dropping to 15 knots.  Tony has till August 27 to make the operation, on August 28 the boat needs to go back to home port – Porto Conte – and August 29 QRL starts again.

Update (2005-08-23):

Weather still not cooperating.  Forecast for tomorrow, August 24, looks reasonable.

Update (2005-08-18):

Tony and the boat are ready to go to JN31 however seaconditions are bad.  Earliest possibility for operations is Monday, August 22 but ONLY if conditions improve.  Currently winds are strong, turning to Mistral and increasing to 30 knots (55kmh).  The planned locator (JN31XA) has no protection from land and is open to the elements.

Update (2005-07-13):

After much work to get the boat ready for another expedition if must say that because of work and family an expedition is only possible between August 17 and august 30.  Sorry.  Before August 17 there are other obligations and after August 30 the water becomes dangerous and unpredictable.

JN31 is in a dangerous part of the Mediterrenean Sea  with unpredictable winds and waves and no protective land or port nearby.  It is about 5-6 hours sailing from my normal port “Porto Conte near Alghero" which is why I plan to move the boat to the port of “Stintino  http://www.immaginidellasardegna.it/mare%20costa/1stintino/  which is only 1 hour sailing from JN31.  Because “Stintino” is rather close to JN31 I can be QRV from about 06:30z-11:00z.  After 11:00z I must go back into port because the sea will become restless and unpredictable.

Any activity will be dependent on wind and sea conditions and be for 3 days maximum.  All activity will be random.  Final decisions will not be made until departure time and be announced as soon as possible in the DXCluster and the ON4KST 144MHz chatsite http://www.on4kst.com/chat/start.php.  All operation will be RANDOM ONLY.  No skeds.

Plans for 2005:

After a few very nice and succesfull expeditions on my boat to JN30XN in 2004 I am planning to go out again in 2005.

I plan to be active from JN31XA for about 3 days during the Perseids.  Also in August another 3 days from JN30XA, and possibly 3 days from JM39XA/JM38XX.  More news in may 2005.  Of course since this is still far in the future, all plans can still change and will depend on family, work and seaconditions.  A final decision will be made on the day before departure.

For these expeditions I plan a small upgrade to my station and will probably use a 1.2WL 7element, 11dBi yagi with an angle of about 26 + 26 degrees and about 100W output power.

When info becomes available it will be placed on this page.

Results 2004:

All QSO’s have been confirmed via direct QSL.  Since I am not a bureau member please reply via the same method.  If you have not received a QSL card, please let me know.

How to work IW0UEI/MM:

There will be NO skeds.  Please do not ask for them, random operation only.

If there is GMS coverage at the expedition site, I will be at the ON4KST chat site: http://www.on4kst.com/chat/start.php.  At the start of the operation a spot with the operating frequency will be put in the DX cluster.

Please do not call while a QSO is running, I will reply to the first station decoded AFTER a QSO is complete.  Calling during a QSO will slow the QSO completion down.  Please do not call unless you HEAR me.  My station is small and I have low ERP.  If you do not hear me, please let the people that do have a chance.  In general you can get the status on a QSO in progress on the ON4KST chat site.

QSL information:

QSL only via direct.  All QSO’s will be confirmed via postal mail, please send your card the same way to:
